There are two reasons, why I am writing this post.
#1- I follow about 15 blogs and 13 of them have already written about “how to gain twitter followers” and few have added “without following back “as suffix and few have used varied titles (but almost similar content). The reason is, Twitter is going crazy and on the verge of becoming the most influential social network.
#2 – I found some good keywords.
Twitter Followers – Social Authority Vs Number of Followers?
Twitter always confuses me in terms of whether I should just look to increase the number of followers (which is not tough actually) or I should start building a relationship by doing all mutually forced stuff like (retweeting, asking an irrelevant question, praising without meaning it).
Even though you’ll find plenty of people saying “Number of twitter followers does not matter”.
But the truth is, every time you see the profile of a twitter user with huge number of followers, you think of the person as an influential social authority.
I know most people reading this will be saying, “dude you should build your social presence and authority”.
Ok. I Got it.
Now let’s talk about how can you (I mean we) achieve both that is social authority as well as a good number of followers.
Explore Your Personal Network, because charity begins at home.
I know you are new to twitter but Facebook (where you used to live earlier) is not new to you. You have many friends and family members who like your status even you just said “I am Sad”.
Update your Facebook status like “hey friends I am using twitter come join the gang” or “friends let’s switch to twitter this time, too much fun here”.
Use your LinkedIn profile and start joining forums related to your niche and start interacting with people.
And when you have say 20,30 or maybe 40 followers that means your campaign has been kick started and you get confidence that one day you can beat Justin Bieber fan following (even though 50% of them are fake).
Choose an influential person in your niche and dig into it
Say your blog is all about SEO, Social and content marketing then try to follow people who blog about the same topic. It’s critical that you choose the right person. Do not choose Rand Fishkin, Matt Cutts in your first attempt. Choose a person in your forte and follow a few people who are his/her followers, maybe 100 a day.
I know this is the oldest trick in the book but it still works and does wonders. There are several benefits of choosing the right person in your niche as you get to know what people in your niche are writing about and you build relationships that will help in future.

Host a Giveaway and increase trusted twitter follower
This one is tested and most of the bloggers are implementing it. Just start a giveaway and offer people anything which will help them in blogging like free WordPress theme or may be a paid plug-in and ask people to follow you if they want to participate in the giveaway (yes your blog your rules ).
On a serious note this trick works, but try this technique if your blog is at least 6 month to 1 year old.

Be a Journalist and get twitter follower
Google recently launched penguin 2.0 update and it became the most talked, tweeted topic and this can be your golden chance to get attention and a few followers. Be the first one to retweet and start interacting with people.
If you can cover the news related to your niche, people tend to follow, this is the reason you see most journalists have a huge number of followers.

Guest Post on authority website in your niche
If you can guest post on the sites like seomoz now only moz , SEJ then you have every chance of getting few twitter followers and those followers will be very crucial as they may help you in acquiring your future projects.
Be a speaker at the blogger meets
Speaking at the events can be very effective for your personal brand as well as for your company or blog. At Bloggers meet, everyone attending the meet are ready with their smart phones and loves tweeting about everything happening in the conference room and even check the profile of the speaker and if you amaze your audience, which can be an expert and beginners you will gain a handful of twitter followers in no time.
There will always be differences of opinion about what matter the most. Is it the huge number of followers that matter or your social presence or getting retweets and mentions? I’ll go with the second one.
So what do you think what matters the most, looking forward to see your opinion in the comments.
